Sukkot (Tishrei)
There is an ancient connection between the holiday of Sukkot and juggling. Rabbi Shimon Ben Gamliel, and his contemporaries would accomplish incredible juggling feats in their celebration of Simchat Beit Hashoevah.
In this workshop: we learn about this ancient water ceremony, the text where we hear of these juggling Jews, and of course we will also learn to juggle!
Rosh Chodesh (Cheshvan)
Following The chagim, the month of Cheshvan gives us a break from holidays. Every month we celebrate the cycle of the calendar with Rosh Chodesh: the new moon.
In this workshop: We discuss Rosh Chodesh, and the cyclicality of the Jewish calendar, while learning the fun art of Hula Hooping! For adults or older students we will connect this discussion to the appropriation of the holiday as a female centered observance.
Chanukah (Kislev)
The Festival of Lights! We help you fill out your Chanukah programming by providing either a fire performance or an LED show. *If you book both Chanukah and Lag Ba’omer, the fire and light performances are quite different and we are happy to perform whichever you prefer.
Shabbat (Tevet)
In the month of Tevet, we focus on Shabbat, the day of rest.
In this workshop: We cover the intersection of rest pertaining to your mind and body and we will practice some individual, partner and group stretching.
Tu B’shvat (Shvat)
The Jewish Arbor day, on Tu B’shvat we will echo our juggling lessons from Sukkot with a specifically environmental spin.
In this workshop: We will make and use equipment to be juggled and balanced from regular household items. It so happens that what we learn to balance looks like a tree!
Purim (Adar)
No Holiday is better for circus than Purim!
In this workshop: we teach the talmudic text where the prophet Elijah teaches that people who make others laugh are assured of a place in Olam Haba. This will be accompanied by a clowning workshop.
We can also perform at your carnival or teach an act to your students to be performed at a carnival)
Passover (Nisan)
This time around the only pyramids we build are human pyramids!
Lag Ba’omer (Iyar)
Fire performances!
*If you book both Chanukah and Lag Ba’omer, the LED and fire performances are quite different, and we can bring different fire artists for the different holidays.
Study Sacred Texts Through Circus Arts (Any month!)
How do we read text differently with our bodies? In these workshops we will become sacred artists, modeling active, artistic, and just plain fun methods of studying Bible through circus arts. These workshops begin with “traditional” study of a sacred text or a Jewish concept. We will then use the circus arts to process that text. For example we may engage in building human pyramids and in partner acrobatics to embody the relationships between characters in that text. I have, however, taught text through the vehicle of many circus arts, such as juggling, trapeze, tightwire, and more.
